FAQ: I want to become a doctoral student at the BSRT Print

I want to apply to the BSRT

When is the next call for application?

Here you can find the next call for application. If it does not show a date, we are still in the planning process. If you want to receive an e-mail announcing our calls for applications click here and subscribe to our mailing list.

Where can I find the application form?

To access the application form you have to register first and then login with your user details. Registration will only be possible during the application period.

Can I send my application by e-mail or by post?

Please use only the online application form provided on this website and do not send any other type of application by post or e-mail as they will be automatically rejected.

How much is the tuition fee?

The only fee BSRT students will have to pay is for the matriculation, which will cost around €300 per semester. This matriculation fee includes the semester ticket which allows students to use the public transport system in Berlin and Potsdam and which is a very cheap alternative to the monthly or yearly subscriptions for public transport.

What do I do if I don’t receive my degree before the application deadline?

It is not necessary to hold the degree at the time of application. However, you must have been awarded your degree prior to the enrolment into the program.

Have my referees already sent the references yet?

We receive a large amount of references and it takes a long time even after the deadline to allocate the refernces to the applications. Therefore we cannot answer this question and we need to ask you to contact your referees directly to confirm if they sent the references.

Shall I contact the supervisor who I wish to join?

We receive a large amount of applications and the faculty members are very busy and cannot answer questions by the applicants. If you have any questions regarding the BSRT, please contact the coordination office. People who are shortlisted for interviews will have the opportunity to discuss all questions regarding the projects during their visit in Berlin.

Is an English test necessary?

An English test is not required if you are a native speaker or if you can prove that you did at least two years of your education in English or spent a longer period in an English speaking country. For all others an English test is also not mandatory although we highly recommend applicants provide a proof of their proficiency in English. If an application is very good it will not be automatically excluded simply because an English test was not submitted if we are convinced that the applicant has no problem to communicate in English. A very good command of the English language is required to be able to communicate within the Research School, but the scientific qualifications and the motivation are the important aspects for a successful application.

Will I receive any funding?

Doctoral researchers and clinical scientist will be funded either by stipends in accordance with the DFG regulations or receive an employment contract in accordance with the salary scales at the Charité.

What visa do I need for traveling to Berlin?

International applicants who are invited to the final admission assessment in Berlin can usually enter Germany on a normal tourist visa. Please contact your local German Embassy for further information.

What do I need to prepare?

You will have to give a short oral presentation about a scientific project you are currently working on (for example your Master’s thesis or another similar scientific project). Your oral presentation should be no longer than 8 minutes plus 4 minutes for questions and discussion. Please make sure that your presentation will last no longer than the 8 minutes because we will interrupt presentations that are longer than this in order to keep to our schedule for the whole day.

Please send us the title of your presentation and a short abstract (no more that 1500 characters including spaces) summarising the presentation you intend giving at least two weeks before the assessement center. We also require the Power Point file of your presentation before you travel to Berlin so we can set up the equipment in advance. Please send us the file in a format that can be opened with a PC using Windows XP at least three working days befor the assessment center starts.

Who will interview me?

You will be interviewed by the Principal Investigators (PI) with responsibility for the projects for which you applied and by the Steering Committee comprising three Professors or their representatives acting as an independent panel. Can I meet other PI’s of the BSRT?

The Assessment Center is organised in sessions. In the beginning of each session we will introduce you to the BSRT faculty who proposed projects for the current call for applications.
